The current municipality of Malax was formed on 1 January 1973, when the municipalities of Malax, Bergö and Petalax were merged. The northern parts of Pörtom municipality were transferred to Malax in 1975. Malax became an independent parish in 1607, and the municipality celebrated its 400th anniversary in 2007.
In Malax, you can live close to both forest and sea, with Vaasa within convenient commuting distance. Bergö offers a unique archipelago environment with a ferry connection to the mainland.

Malax has five daycare centers and preschools, four schools, one lower secondary school, and one upper secondary school.
The lower secondary school and upper secondary school are located in Petalax and bring together pupils and students from both Malax and the municipality of Korsnäs.
Petalax upper secondary school offers a general programme and an interdisciplinary programme.
There are around 130 different associations in Malax, offering a wide range of leisure activities in sports, culture, and other interests.
The municipality’s physical activity advisor is available for senior residents and also works within the Active Seniors project.
The Pixne sports area features facilities for football, skating, ice hockey, futsal, athletics, skiing, and much more. The area includes a sports hall, an ice rink, and an artificial turf field.
The Malax-Korsnäs Adult Education Center offers a wide variety of courses and lectures.
