Yttermalax School

The Swedish-speaking Yttermalax School is the municipality’s largest elementary school for grades 1–6. Köpings School began its operations in 1954 in a brand-new building on the church hill. The school is now named Yttermalax skola, which was its original name from 1881 to 1909. The new school building was constructed according to plans by architect Erik Kråkström. Elementary school classes from grades 1–2, which were previously located in Sockenstugan, were moved to this new building. From 1958 to 1971, the Malax-Pörtom civic school also operated in the school building. Most classes during that time were combined grade classes. In the 1970s, before the construction of the municipal building, the municipal council held its meetings in the school’s assembly hall. The school has been expanded and renovated several times, most recently from 1993 to 1994 and from 2016 to 2019.
